PUBLIC SAFETY
Security is handled together with SAPS & Metro Police. Security issues identified at the outset of the project were numerous, from lengthy delays in the repair of traffic signals to poor lighting in certain areas, vandalism and the lack of an organised informal trade permit system. Wendy Gibson - Taylor: “Metro Police were, generally, too busy dealing with serious crime to be concerned with lights or benches which had been vandalised or paving bricks which had been stolen. We therefore brought in a 24-hour security service.” The service by Enforce supplements the police, who, of course cannot be everywhere at once. Security personnel patrol 24/7 and report back to a Central Control Centre via a common radio system, which can also reach other Service Providers in the FMPZ. Irregularities are reported to the Metro Police whenever necessary.
