São Paulo
The informal city constitutes the central body of this exhibition - the part of the city that does not have legal urbanization, where subdivision of the land is uncontrolled, the buildings are unplanned, there is little or no infrastructure or services, and spontaneous settlements sprawl.
São Paulo contains more than 1 500 favelas and 1 000 illegal settlements in private land, and is faced with the immense challenge of transforming them into districts integrated within its territory.
The Paraísópolis favela, and its strategic proximity to the Morumbi district, serves as the main background to this exhibition. In total, there are 20 architectural and urbanist projects for seven different favelas that identify and highlight the problems of the surroundings and represent a positive way forward. Many of the problems within the favelas are universal, so their resolution would be of global significance and usefulness.
Each project has taken into consideration the following:
CONNECTIONS - translating the meaning of connecting the territories of the informal city to the formal one and building sustainability.
TRANSITIONS - exploiting the links between public and private spaces.
FRUITION - proposing alternative solutions to the traditional techniques for drainage, water use and recycling systems. Seeking the sustainability of these urban systems.
TRANSFORMATIONS - changing downgraded or precarious areas into parks, new homes or spaces for circulation.
